Ever wonder what that busy ant is up to? Or notice how your morning coffee tastes different when you really pay attention? Nature journaling isn't just about drawing pretty flowers (though you totally can!)—it's about waking up to all the amazing stuff happening right under our noses.

Here's the magic formula we're playing with:

First you notice something → then you start to appreciate it → before you know it, you love it → and boom! You want to protect it. It works for everything—bugs (yes, even the weird ones!), birds, puddles, your lunch, that neighbor's dog, literally anything that catches your eye.

But here's where it gets really cool: Journaling is like a superpower for working through your growth edges! Scared of spiders? Journal them and watch your fear transform into fascination. Can't stand broccoli? Start documenting it—how it grows, its textures, colors—and suddenly you might find yourself curious instead of grossed out. Want to reduce waste but don't know where to start? Journal your trash, your food scraps, your daily habits, and watch the solutions unfold naturally. It's like magic, but better because it's real!

What we'll do together:

  • Dive into lessons from "The Tummy Journal" prompts and other transformative projects

  • Explore the fascinating patterns I've noticed in how people use journaling to grow over time

  • Share real stories of transformation and see what themes emerge across different journaling journeys

Come as you are!

Can't draw a stick figure? Perfect! Think you're not "outdoorsy"? Even better! Got something you're avoiding or struggling with? Bring it along—that might be your biggest growth opportunity! This is about curiosity, not perfection.

The best part? You'll leave with a practice that turns ordinary moments into little adventures, helps you work through challenges with wonder instead of judgment, and naturally makes you someone who wants to take better care of the world.

Let's journal our way to some serious growth—and prepare to be amazed by what unfolds! 🌱✨

This class is part of a fun month of free nature journaling prompts from Akshay! Check them out here.

All ages and experience levels are welcome!

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

You might have spotted Akshay Mahajan sharing his infectious enthusiasm at Wild Wonder conferences—from his "Boxy Critters" talk to "Moth: A Love Story," Wild Wonder Sierra adventures, and those magical Hog Island retreat moth nights where he gets everyone equally excited about our fluttery nocturnal friends!

In early 2025, Akshay started the Karl The Fog & Nature Journalers ( an SF Nature Journaling Chapter ) in collaboration with his loving partner and three other close friends. The thriving group meets at different San Francisco nature locations on the third Sunday of each month, creating a beautiful space for nature journaling, getting to know the city, fostering connections, and spreading Wild Wonder across the Bay Area through community building and kindness.

By day, Akshay is a hardware engineer wrestling with unknown unknowns and sketching solutions for his team. By weekend, he's doing the exact same thing—but with bugs, birds, and plants! Nature journaling becomes his playground for dumping thoughts through sketches, wild diagrams, color codes, random arrows, and yes—lots of cartoons. "I love cartoons!" he says. "And honestly? My wild guesses about why a leaf looks weird or how a beetle moves are just as fun as looking up the 'real' answers later!
